With every aftershock, faith grows in Haiti

by Sarah Hudson

Our Wildcat coverage from Haiti

As I drifted off to sleep on my first night at Bethel Mission Outreach orphanage, I never imagined to be awakened so soon. At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 22, I woke up with the rumbling of the earth beneath me in my tent.

It did not take me long to figure out that I was experiencing an aftershock from the massive earthquake that had happened 6 weeks before. International Mission Board missionary, Delores York, was in the tent with me and she quickly popped up and asked, “Did you feel that?”

It only lasted a few seconds long, but it was just enough time to make me realize that I never wanted to experience it again. It was only a few minutes later when a second aftershock occurred. This one was shorter, but no less powerful.

In the tents around me I heard the stirring of the Haitian people all around me. Children were crying to their mothers and people were talking.

Next I heard a sound that was unexpected, but beautiful. Prayers were going up all around me in the Creole. I could not understand the words, but I could hear the pleading in their voices.

I could just imagine them crying out to the Father, the only one who has power over nature, and asking him to protect them and their families, and to protect the few belonging that they had left.

They had already lost so much just six weeks before, and with every aftershock the fears swells up inside of them. I imagine that with every aftershock they are brought back to Jan. 12, the day that the walls crumbled around them and they ran for their lives.

If I learned anything about the Haitian people during my week there, it is that they are resilient. Most of the Haitians at the orphanage were Christians and every ounce of their faith was in God.

When times got difficult, they gave it all to God. When they only got one meal a day and their bellies were empty, they trusted that God would provide them another meal. When their family members and friends perished, they understood that there would be a day when they could spend eternity with them.

As I listened to the prayers going up all around me, I considered my own faith. I have been so blessed with all of the material possessions that I need, and many that I want. I have never been struck with a calamity so great. I have always lived a comfortable life.

My faith has never been tested the way that the Haitian Christians have experienced.

As I tried to fall asleep again to the sound of Creole voices, I realized how small my own faith really is. I’m beginning to wonder if it will take the earth shaking beneath me to make me realize how great my God really is.

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13
