As a Louisiana College student for three years, I have seen a particular phrase assimilate itself into my weekly vocabulary: "Is it for credit?"
In fact, these words have run across my mind so often that they have become like the bouncer of the exclusive club known as my busy schedule.
Of course, it happens to everyone. With time comes maturity, and with maturity responsibility, and with responsibility, inevitably comes the seemingly endless series of activities that can fill up a day.
At LC, in addition to the normal hustle and bustle of classes and homework, there are other things that are required to eat up time - the spiritual and cultural credit requirements.
These requirements are not earned by time nor maturity or responsibility. They are simply a privilege, shall we say, of being educated under the oaks and hills of LC. Yet, these requirements have not integrated themselves as organically into my schedule as say homework or deadlines. They have been for me seemingly large, inconvenient speed bumps of my day-to-day life.
Unfortunately, these speed bumps have taken things that prior to my attending LC would have been for me a treat, a getaway, a refreshing escape from the mundane and banal. Instead, they have attached a stigma to them that I immediately cringe at - like seeing an impending booster shot appointment on my calendar.
Therefore, at this point in my collegiate experience, my special phrase is always on the tip of my tongue, "Is it for credit?"
I always say this when I hear of any even relatively sociable or religious event on campus.
"There's a fair on campus." "Is it for credit?" "There's a buffet lunch on campus." "Is it for credit?" "There's a hot band performing." "Is it for credit?" "There's a nun on campus." "Is it for credit?"
I've become a pinball machine. Insert two credits, earn five minutes of play.
"Hello, my name is Marlisa Quinney. Insert a credit, earn my presence."
